G-zwemmers
Some 45 swimmers with a disability train every week at ZGEEL — for fun or all-out in competition.
Who is it for?
Geel has had a tradition of adapted swimming (G-zwemmen) for more than 30 years. The G-zwemmers currently number around 45 swimmers with an intellectual disability who train together every week. You can join as soon as you can swim 25 metres — if you cannot yet, you start in the G-zwemschool.
- Recreational or competitive: everyone trains together, and those who want to can race.
- Swimming criterium: around 10 competitions a year, all over Belgium.
- There is also a programme for swimmers with a physical disability (being able to swim 25 m is required).
G-ankerclub of the Vlaamse Zwemfederatie
ZGEEL is recognised as a G-ankerclub of the Vlaamse Zwemfederatie (Zwemfed): a reference club for adapted swimming in the region, supported by G-sport Vlaanderen. Every few years the club also hosts an international G competition.
Strong partners
For years the G-zwemmers have worked with partners who help make adapted sport (G-sport) possible in the region:
- G-sport Vlaanderen — the point of contact for adapted sport in Flanders.
- Geelse Sportdienst — the Geel sports department, supporting our activities at the Geel pool.
- Avalympics — adapted sport in the Kempen region.
- Provincie Antwerpen — the Province of Antwerp, providing structural support for adapted sport.
